Perforated Metal Safety Protective Railing in Engineering Construction

Design background

At present, the general safety protection railings in engineering construction are mostly the following two kinds:

  • One is built up by general engineering pipe and fastener. When installing, the vertical bar and the cross bar are in different spatial planes. While the vertical pole stabilization adopts the method of adding oblique bracing rods, and the spacing of the cross bar is 400 mm–600 mm. Both sealing and aesthetic are poor, occupy larger space and the demolition is not convenient.
  • The other is a simple type of protective railing welded by steel wire rod, steel pipe (including round tubes and rectangular tubes, etc.) and other section bars and it is generally welded by cross bars and vertical poles. The beauty degree is higher than the steel pipe and the fastener type protection. The spacing of both the cross bar and vertical bar is 110 mm–400 mm. It has the features of poor sealing, single function and limited range of use.

In order to overcome the shortcomings of poor sealing, single function and lack of interchangeability of two kinds of protective railing, perforated metal protective railing is specially designed.

Design basis

According to Technical Code for Safety of High Working in Building Construction JGJ80-91 provisions:

  • Article 3.1.2 specification of bars and connection requirements for temporary protective railing:
    When other steel bars, such as angle iron and so forth, are used as protective rails, the specification with enough strength should be adopted and fixed by electric welding.
  • Article 3.1.2 When setting up the temporary protective railing, the following requirements must be met:
    Protective railing should be composed of two cross bars and balusters columns. The height of the upper bars from the ground is 1–1.2 m, and the height of the lower bars from the ground is 0.5–0.6 m. In addition to the design calculation, when the length of the bar is longer than 2 m, it is necessary to add balusters columns.
    The fixing of the balusters columns and its connection with the cross bar that its overall structure shall make any place on the upper bar of the protective railing be able to withstand 1000 N external force in any direction. When the railings are located in the place that may occur crowd congestion, vehicle impact or object collision, the section of cross bars or the column spacing should be increased.
    Protective railings must top-down seal with vertical safety net, or set tight fixed foot guard whose height is not less than 18 cm or foot blocking fence whose height is not less than 40 cm under the rail. If there are holes on the foot guard and foot blocking fence, it should not be larger than 25 mm. The distance from the plate and fence to the underside shall not be greater than 10 mm.
    According to the standard requirements, the height of protective railing designed must be more than 1.2 meters, and its strength should meet the requirements of withstanding 1000 N external force. More than 18-centimeter-height foot blocking fence should be set.

Design concept

According to the above articles and regulations, the size of a single protective railing designed is 2 meters wide and 1.25 meters high. Adopt rectangular tubes and weld them into the field shape, acting as ribs. Perforated metals are welded with field-shape ribs to form railing pieces. Using the rectangular tube as a separate column and welded with U-shaped steel to form slot. Then, railing pieces are directly inserted in to U-shaped slots.

Detailed design technical scheme

  • Take field-shaped frames which are welded by rectangular tubes as ribs.
  • Using perforated steel to be mask and connect with field-shaped frames as a whole, in order to make stereotyped and integral closure and form a protective railing with a certain porosity and permeability.
  • Welded steel square tube, U-shaped steel, steel plate base as an integral column. U-shaped steel acts as a railing slot and the steel plate base serves as a stable foundation.
  • When installing, the column is fixed on the concrete base with expansion bolts and insert the protective railing pieces into the U-shaped slot directly. The installation height can be adjusted up and down in the groove. Fix the protective railing with tapping screw on the U-shaped slot.
  • The piece of protective railing has half-piece design, and it is combined and installed by 1 piece, half piece, 1 piece + half piece, half piece × 2, half piece × 3, vertical installation and many other types to meet different sizes of protection requirements.

Advantages

  • Because adopt small-aperture perforated steel, it can prevent small objects which is larger than the aperture diameter from entering the protected area in the construction site, and its sealing property is good.
  • Adopt U-shaped slot connection which is easy to install and disassemble.
  • Half-piece design, combination and installation in various ways can replace project foundation pit, floor, roofing, hole and other border protection, elevator wellhead protection, construction elevator door, platform protection, distribution box protection, tower crane foundation protection and many other protection. It has the advantages of wide use range, high versatility and interchangeability.
  • Connect and fix with tapping screw, which is firm, reliable, and can be repeatedly removed and turnover used.
  • The whole structure is simple, it also has beautiful and generous appearance. It can enhance the safe and civilized image of engineering construction management.

Note:

  • The framework is welded by 30 mm × 30 mm × 1.6 mm Q235 galvanized square pipe and the connection site is full welded.
  • The mask adopts Q235 galvanized perforated metal whose size is 2000 mm × 1255 mm × 0.8 mm with punching diameter of 10 mm. Its hole spacing is 16 mm, with a 60° staggered and uniform distribution.
  • The part which is 240 mm away from the bottom is not perforated and used as a foot blocking board.
  • The mask and the framework are spot welded and the spacing of welding spots is not longer than 80 mm.
  • The surface is painted or sprayed and the paint color can be chosen optionally.
  • The position which is 240 mm away from the bottom can post enterprise name, logo and warning belt waterproof sticker.
